‘Tis the most wonderful time of the year…isn’t it?! Self-care and acknowledging and being in touch with our own Emotions and our own needs is more important than ever, and yes that also includes Christmas! Read on to find some top tips to try when we feel things are getting out of control and our Emotions are
getting the better of us…
At this time of year, more than ever, we’re bombarded from all directions with increasing pressure to have the ‘perfect Christmas’. Everyone seems to look to us Mums to be able to do it all…buy the presents, wrap the presents, decorate the house, order the food, cook the food, host friends and family (often for multiple days and multiple meals), stop the kids arguing so that everyone is smiling for the ‘perfect’ family photo to be uploaded to Insta for all to see…the list goes on! It’s no wonder that in a survey conducted by YouGov, 65% of people said they found Christmas stressful.
Self-care and acknowledging and being in touch with our own Emotions and our own needs is more important than ever, and yes that also includes Christmas!
Here are some top tips to try when we feel things are getting out of control, and our Emotions are getting the better of us.
Top tips when things are getting too much:
- Stop…take a deep breath and pause….and keep breathing…nice and slowly…feel how your body starts to relax and you feel calmer.
- Notice where you are feeling the Emotion in your body – is it in your chest..in your head..everywhere? Just take a moment to acknowledge it and be aware of how it feels in your body.
- Remember this: You are not the Emotion. You might be ‘feeling’ angry but you are not angry. Putting this distance between us and the emotion can be helpful, particularly when the Emotion is a strong one
- Emotions are like waves…they come….and they go…remembering that this feeling is temporary can help manage it
- Emotions are like messengers – they’re a sign to us that our needs are not being met. At a busy time like Christmas this is even more true…so, what is it that you need? A cup of tea, a 20 minute walk around the block on your own, a phone call with a friend. Remember, it’s important that you enjoy your Christmas, too, so take that time out for you! Your family will thank you for it!
