Motherhood and having a meaningful career have always been intertwined for me, each shaping the other in ways I never expected.

When my daughter was born, back before Covid and before hybrid working, I was in the office five days a week. With that routine, guilt often followed me, and I would sit in my office during quiet moments worrying about the milestones that mattered, that I might be missing and have missed. I would have given anything to be able to work from home just one day a week.

From that stress came strength, I dug deep to find the courage to show up, and she learned independence, adaptability, and quiet resilience by watching me. Living through those honest and sometimes tearful moments together has woven diversity and inclusion into the fabric of everything we both do.

The world of work has shifted since then, and while we should not overlook that there are still many jobs that require presence in the office five days a week, inclusion has moved closer to the heart of how businesses like Liberty Specialty Markets operate. At Liberty, I have found more than a career, I found acceptance and understanding. I have a manager who truly sees me and understands the importance of flexibility and support. That compassion has been a gift as I juggle being a mother, wife, helping to care for aging and unwell parents, alongside the heavy responsibilities of a leadership role.

As a senior manager, mentor, Co-Chair of the LMA General Liability Claims Group and as lead of the Ethnic Women in Insurance Network, my experiences have made me a steadfast champion for women, and it has been my honour to watch those I have worked with and mentored excel in their chosen fields.

“What truly sets her apart is her dedication to sorority. She is a steadfast advocate for women in the industry, consistently mentoring, empowering, and championing those around her. Her presence fosters a sense of belonging and community—reminding us all that success is more meaningful when shared.”

“Niala is an inspiration to many and leads by example. Despite her busy schedule she always finds time to guide others in times of need. Her guidance has been invaluable to me, and I can’t thank her enough for her support and thoughtfulness.”

My advice is always heartfelt and simple, enjoy pregnancy and the early days of motherhood, be open with your manager and continue this dialogue, and don’t let worries about your career steal this precious time.
