Continuing our series of case studies that highlight some of the ways our partner employers are supporting working parents, we invited Charlotte Buckland & Alyson Field to talk more about their experience job-sharing the role of Marketing Executive at Liberty Specialty Markets.

Guilt and stress are real! One of the biggest challenges we’ve found is managing the pressure to excel at work and being present for your family.

Being a working mum doesn’t just mean coping – it can mean creating a sustainable and fulfilling routine. We’re Charlotte Buckland and Alyson Field, job-share marketing executives at Liberty Specialty Markets, and we’re excited to share our experiences and what’s worked for us.

Alyson: I’m mum to two children (7 and 4) and have been at Liberty since 2012.
Charlotte: I have two sons (6 and 9) and have been at Liberty since 2011.

Why we job share?
We both worked full-time in marketing before becoming parents and didn’t want to give up meaningful work or miss out on early family time. Job sharing gives us the perfect opportunity to have continuity in our careers while making space to be present at home – a balance that is important to both of us.

How do we make it work?
Because we’re at similar stages with our families and children, we share a level of understanding in both personal and professional lives. We support and understand each other’s styles, strengths and ways of working, which helps to make the role as seamless as possible for us and our team.
Knowing that the other person will pick up where you left off means we can relax on our days off and not worry about coming back to a backlog of work!

What challenges have you faced?
Guilt and stress are real! One of the biggest challenges we’ve found is managing the pressure to excel at work and being present for your family. This can be overwhelming, but we’re lucky to work for such a supportive and flexible company, and our team embraced the change from the beginning, which has been invaluable.
Working part-time has allowed us to be more present at home while still contributing meaningfully at work.

What advice can you offer mothers considering flexible roles?
Some days will be messy, and that’s okay! Over time you’ll find a rhythm that works for you, your family, and your career. Build a strong support system inside and outside of work – that will make a huge difference.
