Here, Jennie Beard, Underwriting Manager, War & Terrorism with Liberty, talks about her experience as a working parent in a demanding role.

 

“Knowing how historically hard it was to make your way in a male-dominated industry, I’m a huge advocate of promoting women in the workplace, particularly those with families. Each year when we celebrate International Women’s Day, I think it’s important to reflect on the strides we’ve made in creating more inclusive environments whilst also recognising the ongoing work that still needs to be done.
I was fortunate enough to join Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM) seven years ago, and I was taken on as a part-time Senior Underwriter.
Of course, juggling work and family life is not always easy. I feel fortunate to have a supportive partner and a people leader who empowers me to lead my team and understands that, whilst I work very hard in a fast-paced environment, I also have family commitments.
My role has shown me that LSM backs people that work part-time. Whilst being part-time, I’ve been promoted to Underwriting Manager, and I think that really shows the depth of the company’s support for people who work part-time and have other responsibilities. I’m thrilled to be able to set an example to women that being in a leadership position as a mother is very much possible!
LSM also offers hybrid working for most roles. I am trusted to deliver regardless of whether I’m working at home or in the office, and this is something that I role model for my team. I believe that this principle prioritises inclusiveness and employee wellbeing.
I believe LSM puts its people first, both externally and internally. It’s one of our core values that has really been embedded into the organisation. I’m hopeful that more companies will recognise the importance of supporting working mothers and creating flexible work environments to champion the advancement of women in industry”.
