You can’t find balance, so stop looking for it. Instead focus on the mundane and what it can do for you.
If only we could find more balance in life, right?
So what do we need to be doing instead?
Let’s take the washing. It has to get done. Everyone needs clean clothes. But imagine if rather than it being another task on the never ending to do list it becomes 10 minutes to yourself. Headphones in, music on, no distractions – just you and the fresh smell of laundry. A quiet pocket of time where you can disconnect and just be.
Things have to happen in life. Things especially need to happen when you are responsible for keeping little people alive – hello mental load! So it’s not about trying to manage around that but instead work with it.
Here are a few simple things to think about so that you don’t get sucked into the balance narrative…
1. Flip the script – if that voice creeps saying, “Ugh, this has to get done but I really don’t want to do it,” ask yourself if there could be something in it for you? Could it be, “Okay, this has to be done, so I’m going to listen to that book I’ve been wanting to read while I do it”?
2. Don’t let parenting guilt get in the way – if you need to stick the TV on for 15 minutes while you can have space to yourself in another room to fold clothes, that is okay!
3. Habit stack where you can – you know the mundane tasks have to get done, so how can you use them to build more habits you want in your life? Want to exercise more but can’t find the time – why not do 15 squats for each drawer of the dishwasher you unload?
As a busy mum you shouldn’t be striving for something that just doesn’t exist. It’s someone else’s narrative that is being pushed on you.
You deserve your own narrative around what the everyday looks like and you definitely deserve to own your days and how they play out.
If you are struggling with the notion of achieving a work-life balance and asking yourself, “Where do my needs fit into the everyday?” know two things:
1 – You are not alone in this struggle.
2 – You don’t have to figure it out alone.
