You might have been dreaming about making a career change for weeks, months or even years.


The day-to-day stress of being in a job you don’t love, or even like very much, can really get you down.


However as tempting as it might be, quitting without having the foggiest idea of where you’re headed to next can be counterproductive. Because you could end up diving back into a job which is in a different location with different people, but still fundamentally isn’t the right fit for you.


So in order to stop repeating the same mistakes over and over again, here are my three steps to help you prepare for your career change:


1) Figure out what you want long term


If you know what your ‘big picture’ career goal is, then you can work backwards from there. It will help you decide which action, steps or jobs you should take in the meantime, because they will be the ones which are bringing you closer to your long-term goal.

2) Build your confidence from knowing yourself better


Understanding what your special strengths and skills are, what motivates you and what gives you a sense of purpose, are all hugely empowering pieces of information. You will be able to choose roles which are a great fit, find companies which share your values, and sell yourself to your dream employer or client with a natural inner confidence.


3) Test the waters


Perhaps you could research evening classes and sign up for one. Or volunteer at a charity you’re passionate about. Or start sharing on social media about your new side project. Or sign up with a career coach to figure out what you really want to do. Whatever it is, start to test your ideas out there in the real world to see how it feels, and this will teach you a huge amount about what you REALLY enjoy and feel energised by.


By putting in some groundwork first, you’ll be giving yourself the best possible chance of making your next career move a great success!
