"I engaged Emma as my career coach to assist me with my application and preparation for a significant internal promotion. This was a particularly interesting time for me as I had also just returned from maternity leave so was adjusting to being a working mother for the first time.
Emma helped me with intelligent and practical strategies for managing work/ life balance and tips for elevating my management style at work in areas such as mentoring others, delegation, leading by example and business development.
Emma’s style is friendly, personal but reassuringly professional and sessions of quite intense introspection can be balanced with light hearted discussions. My coaching was effortlessly tailored to suit and Emma took the time to adapt where we discovered certain areas needed more attention."
Partner, international law firm
"I approached Emma when I had a difficult career choice to make. Emma had a brilliant disposition, she strikes the perfect balance of listening, asking open questions and really guides you to the right answer without inflicting her opinion on you. She is fantastic and someone I would definitely recommend and or use again. I walked away feeling empowered and motivated by my career choice."
Partner, global accountancy and consultancy firm
"Emma provided me with the opportunity to explore situations, better understand them and set out how I want to deal with them, being more thoughtful to those around me. She was a pleasure to talk to - I never once felt judgement on her part. She was thoroughly supportive from the outset. Emma also helped me to plan what I wanted to achieve at work - this stuck with me between sessions and helped to motivate me in challenging situations.
The evaluative work I did with Emma helped me to develop my approach to work, but also had a positive impact on my home life too. I have found myself putting more time and consideration into how I deal with situations, resulting in positive outcomes all round."
Senior manager, charity
I started my career in consultancy and executive search, working with law firms, corporate clients and financial institutions. This gave me a good insight into a range of industries and the importance of finding the right fit so that individuals and organisations can realise their potential.
Many clients come to me when they are considering a career changes or interviewing for new roles. As well as confidence-coaching, I can provide expertise in competency interviewing, CV writing, due diligence and building robust business cases.
In addition to working with private clients, I have been privileged to work in the NHS, including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, working across a range of people management and leadership development roles: designing and delivering training programmes and facilitating team building workshops.
I have a particular interest in supporting organisations to become more inclusive places to work and helping mothers to thrive in successful, meaningful careers.
What Drew You To Coaching?
For me, coaching is where my passion and skills meet. Even before I formally started my career, coaching has played an important part in my life.
When I was 18, I went to study law at Oxford University. I was the only person from my state school to get an Oxbridge offer and, at first, felt like a fish out of water. My first taste of imposter syndrome. I was sure my studies would feel like an Ally McBeal/ Legally Blonde montage, but instead everything felt difficult and new.
Something that helped my confidence and wellbeing throughout my degree was working as a peer supporter and health and wellbeing officer. Using coaching skills and learning how to create a safe, compassionate space gave me purpose, and I started to rebuild the image of myself and who I wanted to be.
Since graduating, coaching has been the golden thread running through my work. It is such a gift to help my clients achieve their personal and professional goals. I find the models and theories intellectually stimulating and, in turn, I learn lots from the clever and talented clients I work with.
My favourite aspect of coaching is building great relationships with my clients and helping them find practical solutions to achieve their goals. Recent examples of client successes include: submitting a successful law firm partnership application, building up confidence and succeeding at interview, managing difficult conversations about staff performance, improving work-life balance and feeling more in control.
I am a qualified executive coach and mentor, and founded my own business, Purpose Coaching & Development Ltd, in 2021.
