Who doesn’t want a family unit that collaborates, embraces individuality and shares the same purpose?

During my 23 year marketing career, I had the privilege of working with some truly inspiring and high performing teams, and also with some that weren’t.

As I moved into leadership roles, I found that it wasn’t always simple to identify the success factors behind the teams that created real value.  Yes, there was trust, collaboration and creativity, but what else?

As an EMCC accredited executive coach, I’ve spent the last 5 years working with individuals and teams who are striving for career fulfilment and success.  Through covid this meant a real focus on resilience and agility.

That work has brought me to this – the pillars of a value creating team – emotional agility, resilience, creative thinking and having a shared purpose.  And today I want to share how those pillars can be transferred to family life.

Emotional agility focuses on the way we identify and respond to our emotions, thoughts and behaviours.  It develops not only self-awareness but also awareness of the impact we have on others and the impact they have on us.  In a close family environment where emotions often run high, choosing the right response can be the difference between peace and slammed doors!

Individual and team resilience give us the tools to adapt to, alter or change the course we’re on, a necessary skill for fast paced family life.  It also helps us develop the confidence to tackle setbacks, seeing them as opportunities to learn and grow.

Creative thinking takes place when we all feel safe to challenge, when our curiosity is nurtured and when we are inspired and motivated to contribute.  Allowing kids to think freely can help them (and us) gain valuable new perspectives on their situation.

Finally, the most effective teams are more than the sum of their parts.  They have a shared purpose, which they’ve co-created and have all bought into.  So what’s the purpose of your family unit?  What are you all striving for?  What are some of the big goals on the horizon?
